Gluing your bamboo

EXCERPTS CHAPTER VI

VARIOUS TYPES OF GLUE

You can use three types of glue for bamboo rod building: polyurethane, epoxy and resorcinol formaldehyde. These glues can be found at material wholesalers for the building and woodworking trade.

Polyurethanes
Their advantage is that they dry in a humid environment, with moisture being converted into a catalyst. Almost every glue manufacturer will have one.(...)
Epoxy Resins
These glues are easy to use and they are available everywhere. Just check that the glue is new and thus recently stored. Moreover it is the best glue for bamboo repair. Hot curing at 40 to 70°C, with a hair drier or in a tube with... (...)
Resorcinol Glues
Among the three types of glues described here, this type is the strongest. Resorcinol glues consist of a transparent liquid or a white powder and a thick red-brown liquid, which are … (...)

THE BINDING MACHINE

Over the past years I have made some modifications to the Garrison machine as I was not entirely satisfied with it. So I will draw your attention ... (...)

DESCRIPTION AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE MACHINE

HOW TO assemble
6.1 The assembling and binding machine

The frame of the machine is made from brass, stainless steel or aluminium sheet (dimensions 30 X 25 cm) which when folded will form the right angle section on which the various elements will be fastened.

1. Cradles with adjustment for spacing
2. Binding tension discs
3. Cord guide
4.Mounting spindle for binding- cord spool.
5.Driving spool anchor slot for drive cable
6.Driving spool with handle.

The sketch and photos 6.1 to 6.4 illustrate how it works. (The size illustrated can be varied depending on the diameter of your pulleys.)
The two cradles can be made from … (...)

The binding tension discs are made from short rods with both ends threaded.

These are screwed into the frame. Each rod is fitted with a washer and a light compression spring which presses against two cupped or chamfered washers placed face-to-face and held in place by a nut that provides an adjustment for the tension of the binding cord.

APPLYING THE GLUE AND BINDING THE BLANK

Putting the strips in place and the binding process
In the chapter on hollowing, the strips were arranged side-by-side, the enamel side being held on the board by adhesive tape.… (...)

Hand Binding
It must be said in the beginning that hand binding is much more difficult and time consuming than machine binding and that it is not compatible with the use of resorcinol glue, even the slower setting ones... (…)

Curing

If you use polyurethane glue, check the section for straightness and for any sign of twisting before hanging it up. If you use epoxy or resorcinol glue, you could consider … (...)

UNWRAPPING AND CLEANING THE GLUED BLANK

It is a significant moment when you remove the cord used for binding strips together after gluing. The final blank will gradually appear and you will appreciate the result of lot of work. The hours spent in cutting, splitting and scraping the bamboo … (...)
After cleaning will come straightening and then the final sanding the very last operation in building rod blank.

STRAIGHTENING

Straightening can be performed either at the gluing stage, before curing of the glue (called "cold" straightening), or when the curing is complete ("heat" straightening). In my mind, the cold straightening ... (…)

STRAIGHTENING TECHNIQUES

As soon as the strips have been glued and bound, you must immediately examine the blank for possible twisting. By placing the bland flat on a table and making varying twists in specific places … (...)

SANDING

Having successfully passed that final straightness check, the blankwill be sanded, that is to say that you will remove the remains of amorphous cuticle or enamel. You will then seize the occasion to check each face … (...)
A good camphorated smell emerges during this operation an odour with a "finishing" taste.
